Al Matjar is a magnificent construction which was founded by an Italian architect in 1941. It’s the result of a lot of rigor and finesse.
Its first owner was Haj Med Belabess Bennani, wholesaler of all kinds of fabrics; he also was one of the biggest suppliers of southern Morroco at that time.
Therefore, Al Matjar has become the first store in “Souk Semmarine” which fist was, in the 1940’s, dedicated to shelter the carriages.
The choice of such a location is deliberate because it represents one of the most visited catchment areas in Morocco.
We should highlight the fact that «Souk Semmarine» has seen a devastating fire that caused several damages. Only two shops were saved, including Al Matjar, thanks to god.
Afterwards, M. Bennani invested in Casablanca's textile industry, becoming one of the biggest Moroccan businessmen. Then the Benchekroun family took over the fabric business.
Al Matjar had to travel through years to finally belong to M. Chabi and M. Bentahar. The lucky owners of this historical construction have the pleasure to display a set of carpets, and plenty of other craft products and handwork.
